Sleep depends on two interacting processes

The clock shifts slowly and incompletely

The master clock can move its phase by only a limited amount per day, so adapting fully to a night schedule takes over a week of consistent exposure.

Most rotating schedules change before that adaptation completes, leaving workers permanently between two phases.

Even on fixed night schedules, daylight during the commute home and social life on days off pull the clock back toward a day-oriented phase.

Body systems shift at different rates

Clocks in the liver, gut and other tissues respond partly to feeding times rather than to light, so they move on a different schedule from the master clock.

The result is internal desynchrony, where different systems are operating on different times rather than simply being shifted together.

Eating during the biological night produces larger glucose and lipid responses than the same meal during the biological day, which is one route by which shift work affects metabolic health.

Daytime sleep faces additional obstacles

Ambient noise, traffic, daylight through curtains and household activity all occur during the sleep period rather than around it.

Body temperature is rising through the morning, and falling temperature normally supports sleep onset, so the physiology is working against the attempt.

These factors compound the circadian problem rather than replacing it, which is why blackout and quiet help without solving the difficulty.

Mitigation targets timing rather than effort

Strategic light exposure during shifts and light avoidance on the journey home shift the clock in the intended direction rather than fighting it.

Consistent sleep timing across working and rest days, even at the cost of social convenience, reduces the repeated re-alignment demanded of the clock.

Persistent insomnia or excessive sleepiness in shift workers is a recognised clinical condition with specific treatments, and it warrants assessment rather than tolerance.
